Hikers used to be told to buy the sturdiest boot. Now more and more are choosing the opposite. A physiotherapist lists the 5 biggest reasons

Physiotherapist Matti Melanen explains why an outdoor shoe should let your foot do its work.

My answer is yes — for most people on most trails, a barefoot shoe is a better hiking shoe than a stiff, heavy boot. I'd argue the hiking boot is the shoe where old habits sit tightest. It has had to be heavy, stiff and really supportive — otherwise you are ”completely at the mercy of nature”. It doesn't have to be that way.

In this article I'll give you 5 reasons to switch your outdoor shoes to barefoot shoes. The same reasons come up again and again in a customer survey we ran in Finland in 2025, answered by more than 4,000 barefoot shoe users.

1 Exceptional comfort and light weight

97% of respondents find barefoot shoes more comfortable than regular shoes.

Walking in barefoot shoes is simply comfortable. That is the thing their users talk about most. The step is light and free, and nothing presses anywhere. Many describe the feeling by saying the foot rests inside the shoe even after a full day of walking. And when walking feels good, you head out more easily and the walk stretches longer than you planned.

The other half is weight. A traditional hiking boot weighs 450–1500 g per shoe, while Vaistoa's outdoor models weigh only around 300 g. Research suggests that one gram on your foot costs about as much energy as six grams in your backpack. That is why I say a light shoe is not only a question of comfort, but of endurance.

2 Better ground feel and agility in a barefoot hiking shoe — and a surer step

82% of respondents say their balance improved, and 84% feel more connected to nature and the world around them in barefoot shoes.

A thin, flexible sole lets the sole of your foot feel the ground: roots, rocks and slopes. There are more than 200,000 nerve endings in the sole of the foot, and with every step they tell the brain what is happening underfoot. A thick sole muffles that message, and you move through the terrain as if ”blindfolded”.

When the information arrives in time, the muscles have time to react and the step lands more surely. That agility is hard to explain but easy to notice: on rocky ground you don't have to stop and think about where to put your foot. Many describe the same thing as a connection to nature — the terrain is felt underfoot, not just seen.

3 A shoe shaped to your anatomy doesn't pinch, squeeze or rub

79% of respondents say the circulation or metabolism in their feet improved after switching to barefoot shoes.

A regular hiking boot narrows towards the toes, because its last is built on the terms of fashion, not of the foot. A shoe shaped to your anatomy does the opposite: it is widest where your foot is widest, at the toes, and a flat sole keeps the foot in place on descents too.

When the foot has the natural space it needs inside the shoe, nothing pinches, squeezes or rubs. Circulation in the foot can work freely, and you don't arrive at the rest stop desperate to take your shoes off.

4 Your feet and back take less strain when the load spreads across the joints more naturally

91% of respondents who had suffered from pain say they got relief after switching to barefoot shoes. 79% say their posture improved.

A raised heel shifts your centre of gravity forward. Every joint from ankle to neck has to compensate to stay balanced against gravity, and over the course of a day the overload gathers in the same places — most often the knees and the lower back.

With no heel lift, the body finds its natural line, and that can show in your posture as well. The load spreads more evenly instead of piling into single spots. That is why many aches can ease without having to cut the trip short.

5 Your feet get stronger naturally in barefoot shoes, because the small muscles go back to work

95% of respondents say their foot muscles work more actively, and 89% feel their feet have got stronger since switching to barefoot shoes.

The foot has 33 moving joints, controlled by 29 muscles and their tendons. They are built to react to the ground. A stiff sole does part of that work for the foot, and a muscle that doesn't work doesn't get stronger.

A forest trail, a bed of roots and a field of rocks are the best possible training for the foot, because they never repeat the same shape twice. But that training only happens if the shoe lets it through. Then the trip is not just a strain on your feet, but a workout for them.
